A word that made the Hyundai. "Hey, have you tried it?"

"Hey, have you tried it?"

A word that made the Hyundai.

Let me talk about Hyundai Group founder Chung Ju-yung. He is the number one contributor to the Korean economy, and he still inspires many young people with a sense of challenge.

Chairman Chung Ju-yung.

In particular, he is the one who made Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Motor exist. He was a mind of "an indomitable sense of challenge that there are trials but no failures."

And there's a saying he lefted. That is "Hey, have you tried it?"

This means not to challenge and not to think it is impossible.  His life was a series of challenges.

Who is he?

He completed Korea's Gyeongbu Expressway in two years and five months in 1970s. The Gyeongbu Expressway is over 400 kilometers long.

Gyeongbu Expressway

It also announced the start of the auto industry through Hyundai Motor. Hyundai Motor can be looked in the U.S. probably because of its chairman Chung Ju-yung.

Especially impressive is the shipbuilding industry. Chung's dream was to build a large shipyard. But in 1970, Korea was very poor.

So, everyone thought it would be impossible to build a big shipyard on a sandy beach with nothing.

"How can we build a shipyard in this poor country when we have no money, no skills, no experience, and no reputation?" some said.

Chairman Chung, however, said. "Hey, have you tried it?."

The Story of Chairman Chung Ju-yung's Ship

Chung left for England to raise funds for the construction of the shipyard. At that time, he only had a photograph of the white sand beach, a map of the shipyard site, and a design of an oil tanker borrowed from abroad.

He finally meets and talks to "Charles Brooke Longbottom", chairman of the British shipyard "A&P Appledore."

"We are planning to set up a shipyard, so please introduce us to a bank where we can borrow money," Chung said.

But Britain's Chairman Charles Brooke Longbottom refused.

At that time, Chairman Chung took out a bill(it was printed a ship.) from his pants pocket and said,

"We made iron plate ship ahead of Britain. Industrialization is late, but its potential is high potential. " said.

Iron Ship, "the Turtle Ship."

He who confirmed the potential of Chung Ju-yung, connects Barclays Bank, Britain's largest bank, with Chung.

The bank offers him terms. "Before you approve the loan, get the ship order contract."

This means that the ship must be sold, before borrowing money to build the shipyard.

It also would be virtually impossible. But Chung flies to Greece when he hears that the chairman of the Greek "Sun Enterprise" is looking for a cheap ship.

Chung says with a photo of the sand and shipyard sites. If you buy me a ship I made, I can get a loan from the British government.  Then I will buy a machine and make your a ship.
In the end, Chung was signed an order for two 260,000-ton tankers. Later, Chung borrowed money from the Bank of England and started working. At this time, time was running out. However, he was the first time in the world to challenge building a shipyard and an oil tanker at the same time.

Again, if someone asks, "Is this possible?" Chairman Chung will be answered. "Hey, have you tried it?."

In the end, employees and Chung worked together day and night to complete the project within the contract time. This is the first step in Hyundai.

"Hey, have you tried it?."

Entrepreneurship. An indomitable spirit of challenge and creativity centered on the field must be the virtues of the present business and economy. At this time, The public will remember. Chung's "Hey, have you tried it?."
